What is Agritourism?

Agritourism is tourism that involves visiting orchards, ranches, or other agricultural businesses to enjoy themselves, learn, or experience a different culture.

This tourism sector provides the opportunity to learn more about how produce is grown and the agriculturists that cultivate these crops. Support local agriculture, promote sustainable tourism, and have fun, all in one visit.

Agrotourism exists all over the world! Depending on the region and your interests, they can also be small- or large-scale. Everyday agritourism activities include:

  • Winery visits and wine tastings

  • Distillery visits

  • U-pick operations

  • Horseback riding

  • Hayrides

  • Agricultural museums

  • Cottages and bed & breakfasts

  • Vineyard-to-table dinners

  • Corn mazes and pumpkin patches

  • Gastronomic festivals

The Benefits of Agrotourism

Agritourism benefits us all – tourists, farmers, gardeners, local communities, and the environment. This is because it goes beyond the superficial aspects of travel to encourage meaningful connections between tourists and their visiting communities. Here are some of its most significant benefits:

  • Supports small businesses and increases demand for locally-made products

  • Promotes sustainable agricultural practices and biodiversity preservation

  • Revitalizes rural communities

  • Helps educate the public about agriculture and nature

Agritourism benefits you, too! It’s become increasingly popular with tourists for its unique experience. You can immerse yourself in nature, connect with local communities, and support agricultural businesses that use more environmentally friendly practices. You’ll also indulge in locally-grown produce and vineyard-to-table dinners, providing a gastronomic experience. Whether you’re passionate about sustainability or simply love learning (and relaxing!) in nature, you should consider agritourism for your next trip!
